Orlando, Florida – August 6, 2026. In a moving ceremony held at the Northbridge University campus, Nuevo Sendero hosted the graduation for the fourth cohort of the Brave Hearts Self-Sufficiency Academy—”Sembrando Esperanza” (Sowing Hope)—a program designed to empower survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse through education, leadership, entrepreneurship, and economic self-sufficiency.
Over the course of several weeks, ten courageous women participated in a comprehensive training program that equipped them with tools in personal development, leadership, communication, finance, marketing, business administration, legal matters, customer service, and business plan development, preparing them to build a future of greater independence and economic stability.
The ceremony brought together officials, community leaders, strategic partners, sponsors, family members, and instructors to celebrate the graduates’ effort, perseverance, and commitment.
The event was hosted by Matty Frías, the Academy’s Director, who highlighted the transformative power of education as a tool to break the cycle of violence and open new opportunities for survivors. Additionally, Olga Castaño, the Academy’s General Coordinator, emphasized the commitment, discipline, and growth demonstrated by the participants throughout the program.
Welcoming remarks were delivered by Dr. Diana Mejía, President and CEO of Nuevo Sendero and the Academy, who reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to continuing the development of programs that promote holistic restoration and economic independence for female survivors.
As part of the ceremony, AIC University, represented by Dr. Luis Piña, provided academic certification for the program, lending significant institutional backing.
One of the evening’s most significant moments was a special recognition presented to Dr. Diana Mejía by Gary Berrios—representing Senator Rick Scott—who delivered an official letter acknowledging her leadership and extraordinary track record of service to the cause. The ceremony was also honored by the presence of Carol Burkett, attending on behalf of Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings, thereby reaffirming local authorities’ support for the prevention, education, and empowerment initiatives led by Nuevo Sendero.
This academy serves as Nuevo Sendero’s flagship economic development program, aiming to equip survivors with the tools needed to boost their self-esteem, develop their talents, launch their own businesses, and achieve independent lives.
Nuevo Sendero extended special thanks to Northbridge University—led by Executive Director Nicolás Talotta and Director Martin Levert—for once again opening the institution’s doors to host the Academy and the graduation ceremony, thereby reaffirming a strategic partnership that continues to create opportunities for the community.
The organization also acknowledged the invaluable support of Esperanza United, the program’s primary sponsor, as well as instructors Dr. Wanda Bonet, Zanibel Melo, Aixa Aviles, and Yasmin Chaljub, among other instructors, volunteers, strategic partners, and collaborating companies that made this fourth edition possible.
